How Exercise Affects My Skin / My Skincare Routine
So as dancers and athletes we sweat A LOT. Sweating can actually be very good for your skin, it can help release toxins but it can also irritate your skin, especially if it is left on your skin for too long after workouts. As dancers that may seem tricky because we are in and out of rehearsals all day and can’t shower or really wash our face until we are fully done with rehearsals or classes. Some of my friends keep facial cleansing wipes in their bag to use after class. Below I am going to share with you some tips I use to help keep my skin clear and what products I use for my skincare routine.
Exercise promotes heathy circulation in the body and helps reduce stress as well, which will benefit your skin. Cardio workouts increase blood flow which helps skin cells rejuvenate and it can also help deliver oxygen and nutrients to your skin. Like I said earlier, sweating is actually good for our skin as it helps “sweat out” the toxins. What may affect your skin and make it more prone to breakouts is sitting around in your workout close that our damp and sweaty, which can clog pores due to excess oil. So if you are having a long day of classes and rehearsals I would suggest bringing at least two pairs of leotards and tights to change into. I typically change to a fresh leotard and tights during my lunch break. It feels way more comfortable anyway!
There are other factors that go into having clear skin as well, such as a healthy and clean diet and good sleep. As dancers it is important for us to get enough sleep and eat well so our bodies don’t get run down or injured, but it can also help your skin too. For me, being vegan has helped me a lot with my skin and overall health. I’ve never had meat, but after I cut out dairy, my gut just already felt cleaner. Weird, I know, but it’s true. Of course, you can still eat unhealthy as a vegan, so you have to learn to do it the right way. No matter what diet you follow it is important to incorporate a lot of fruits and vegetables and less processed meals. A lot of sugar and bread also doesn’t work too well with my body and skin, even though I have a huge sweet tooth. I am currently taking probiotics in the morning and I overall feel much better when I take those as well. If I don’t have access to probiotics I will drink a kombucha. I love the Health Ade pomegranate one! I didn’t really use to like kombucha actually, but I really love this flavor now.
On top of my vegan diet, I have found some amazing skincare products that have worked really well with my skin. Last year I discovered Fré Skincare and I have been in love with them ever since. First off they are 100% vegan and cruelty free, which is typically the first thing I look for in a brand. Secondly, for every one of their sets sold they will plant one Argan Tree (also know as “The Tree of Life” ) in Morocco. By planting a tree in Morocco is helps the endangered forest and empowering women who harvest the argan oil. (AMAZING right!) They are such a cool company, so glad I came across them.
I have the Fré 123 set which includes a facial cleanser, a facial moisturizer with SPF 30, and a replenishing serum. It doesn’t irritate my skin or cause it to break out, I think it actually helps prevent them. I use the replenishing serum at night before bed and it has really helped my skin. I can’t go to bed without washing my face and applying the serum. I feel like this set really helped keep my skin more calm and clear during Nutcracker season with all the extra stage makeup. P.S. Tea Tree Oil has also been a huge help when I get breakouts. I am currently using the one from Trader Joe’s. I just dilute it with water and apply it to any blemishes I want to get rid of. I will apply it before bed after I was my face. Don’t put it too close to your eyes though, it will burn. Also some brands already come diluted, so just make sure to check the packaging. =)
To sum it all up….you have to find a routine that works for you, everyone is different. This is what has helped me the best with my skin. A good diet, better sleep, and finding natural, plant based skin care products. Also, don’t forget to drink water. That will have a big impact on your skin as well!
